Jermaine Jackson tours James Island in the Gambia
Jermaine Jackson tours James Island in the Gambia
James Island is an island in the Gambia River, 30km from the river mouth and near Juffureh in the country of The Gambia. It contains a fort known as Fort James. As an important historical site in the West African slave trade, it is now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, together with related sites including Albreda, Juffureh and Fort Bullen. James Island is suffering heavy erosion, and is now approximately 1/6th of its size during the times of the fort. Ruins of several of the British administrative buildings (including a single cell, apparently used to house the most troublesome captives), a small jetty and a number of skeletal baobab trees remain. The ruins have been stabilised, and protected by a capping. Due to the low land of the island, some structures are at times beaten by the waves during high tide and storms. [1] Kunta Kinte, author Alex Haley's Mandingo ancestor, described in the book and TV series Roots, was probably shipped through James Island.Alex Haley,

Best Cab in The Gambia!
Best Cab in The Gambia!
This guy was by far Adam and my favourite cab driver in The Gambia. We were fortunate enough to ride with him a few times. Every time we did he had the same mix tape playing introducing us to our new favourite song: The World is a Cycle by Richie Spice. I think this video is the first time we rode with him. www.sites.google.com

Sheraton Gambia Hotel Resort Spa - Makasutu Cultural Forest - Gambia The history of Makasutu and the whole décor is spell-binding. The majestic River Gambia is at its most beautiful and riding on the multi-colored piroque boats is exciting because of the wide assortment of beautiful birds, crocodiles, monkeys and intriguing mangroves. The ancient trees, the healing plants the cultural show that is so enchanting and moving is reminiscent of Africa of the past, the nostalgia of simpler times. The fishermen still ply the river for the abundant fish. The women still skirt the mangroves looking for oysters in the same way that it has been practiced for the past 100s of years. www.starwoodhotels.com

Footballgambia.Org - UK Charity - Gambian Football Coach Buba Touray
Footballgambia.Org - UK Charity - Gambian Football Coach Buba Touray
Football Gambia.Org UK charity decide to sponsor 24 year old coach Buba Touray from Mandinaring, The Gambia - April 2011. Buba Touray is no ordinary coach. He attended FG's level 1 coaching course in Jan '11 conducted my Rob 'Scouse' Munro and it was Scouse who was impressed with his coaching style. Buba suffered a horrendous hospital error after falling down a well when he was 12 months old - his hands were amputated by mistake!!!! This has not stopped Buba and against all odds he learnt how to read, write and he completed his school education with flying colours. Buba also known as Pires (Arsenal Legend), was a great player but to avoid injury he focused on football coaching. It was only a matter of time until Buba set up his own football academy in his home town - Mandinaring football academy was born....... The academy has 3 teams (under 7s 9s & 13s) and although FG has donated a sizeable amount of kit to Buba, he still needs help to run his club efficiently. Buba coaches 6 times a week and still has to provide for his family! If you can help in anyway please email: info@footballgambia.org

Support girls like Cecilia! www.gambiarising.org Cecilia is a very intelligent girl, very well educated and hard working. Her major problem is health: she has sickle cell anemia and has had to be taken to Bansang several times for transfusions. She has needed support for this, as well as for school expenses, since her parents are quite poor subsistence farmers with no disposable income. Despite these challenges, Cecilia is always first in her class even when her sickness kept her so many times out of school. Father Jean Diagne made the video with his Flip camera and asked her the questions. www.gambiarising.org

Bussum vrouwentuin Kandong, Gambia 1 (Bussum Garden)
Bussum vrouwentuin Kandong, Gambia 1 (Bussum Garden)
Bussum Women's Garden Kadong: Visiting the land that will be made available by the VDC and Alkalo of Kadong. Initial size of the garden will be between 250 and 350 wide and long. The location of the garden is as such that extensions of the garden in the future are possible. This garden is unique in the way that it is planned to harvest at least 4 times a year. This compared with traditional gardens in the Gambia that harvest at the most 2 times per year. The extension of the harvest possibilities is due to: - Irrigation system based on a borehole and pump driven by Solar panels (meaning: no longer depended on solely the rain period) - Extensive education of the Women working the garden in ways of roulational planting, thus keeping the soil in condition - Intensive guidance by external project managers and agricultural institutions, thus having the opportunity to react fast to change in general conditions. The garden will be driven by a corporation of women. The various harvests will be divided: - among the women for own use (feeding their family) - to the corporation to be sold on local markets (poverty reduction)

Our Happy Singing School Children at Farato In The Gambia - By Karmic Angels
Karmic Angels is an International and UK Registered Charity (UK Charity No 1130347) and this is one of our 7 projects and is the latest school build we are undertaking in the bush. We are also supporting 15 orphan children here to give them education when they would have no chance of being educated. It costs just £5 a month (as we are a totally non profit charity) to support an orphan child in the Gambia and we need £9500 to build the 4 classrooms and a teachers office. Can you help? contact us at karmicangels@hotmail.com or check out our website www.karmicangels.org.uk Thank you
